Chris McCandless rejects a traditional path of success and instead defines success on his own terms through freedom, experience, and personal meaning. Reflect on what success means to you at your current stage in life. In the response, explain how success is currently defined (grades, college acceptance, achievements, happiness, etc.) and where those ideas come from. Then, consider whether that definition truly reflects personal values or if it is shaped by expectations from family, school, or society.

Right now, I think that success to me is getting good grades, getting accepted into a good college, living a comfortable life, and being happy with my life and my successes. These ideas come from how I have grown up and how I see myself in the future. I think that the part of relying on grades and achievements is mostly shaped from my parents' expectation, but they have raised me to find joy in those things as well. The values of happiness and inner acceptance come from my own expectations, as I prioritize my feelings in many situations.

In class, we read chapter 9 and 10 and did two activities.

I learned about another adventurer named Ruess and his parallels to McCandless.

Write about a time you felt connected to nature, like the kinship in Native American myths

Reflect on a time when you paused to appreciate the beauty of nature, much like the speaker in “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Where were you, what did you notice, and how did that moment of stillness make you feel or change your perspective?

You are currently working on a soundtrack for selected Emily Dickinson poems. With that in mind, if asked to choose a song to describe your life right now, which song would you select and why?
